Aurukun Wetland Charters is wholly owned and operated by a community based charitable trust and is a journey into one of the last frontiers of Australia.
The Aurukun Wetlands are located on the Western Coast of Cape York Peninsula. The township of Aurukun is an Aboriginal community of about 1000 people and is the traditional home of the Wik and Wik Way people who are also the traditional owners of the Wetlands.
The Aurukun Wetlands, are simply massive. Three great rivers, the Archer, the Ward and the Watson all converge at the one point. That junction is the township of Aurukun and the start of the expedition on the MV Pikkuw, your charter vessel into the wetlands.
For three days, visitors are taken on a journey, highlighted by encounters with abundant wildlife, pristine waterways and interaction with the Wik people – whose culture and heritage is amongst the strongest in all of Australia. Traditional owners will share insights into the culture – their association with the land dates back 40,000 years and is one of deep significance. Whether it be harvesting native bush honey, spearing fish or having a traditional kup murrie (earth oven cooked meal), the encounter with the Wik people is a highlight of a truly memorable experience.
The MV Pikkuw, is a home away from home. Sleeping up to 8 people (2 x two berth cabins & 1 x 4 berth cabin) in air conditioned comfort, it is an ideal base for exploring the waterways of the Wetlands. Tethered alongside Pikkuw are 3 tenders to ensure that no place in the Wetlands is inaccessible. A shower, compositing toilet, LCD screen TV and DVD player are just a few of the creature comforts. If fishing is of interest, then visitors will not leave disappointed with some of the creeks and streams flowing off the river systems having never seeing a fishing line.
This experience runs on scheduled departures between the months of May and November and includes a visit to the Western Cape Cultural Centre including an orientation to the area, 3 nights at the Cape York Turtle Rescue, 3 nights with Aurukun Wetland Charters and special air charters between the products. All meals and accommodation are also included.
By supporting this product, not only will you be experiencing a magnificent part of Australia, but also supporting some of the most culturally strong Aboriginal communities in Australia.
